Talk to the legal experts

Have you ever been in position where you thought you might need legal guidance but were unsure? Or you didn't have the budget available to discuss your issue with a lawyer? Or you wanted to talk through an issue or course of action with a lawyer to get a better understanding of the potential ramifications?

Or quite simply, you had received legal advice but for whatever reason you were keen to receive a second opinion?

That's why Children in Scotland has introduced a FREE legal helpline provided by Gillespie Macandrew's charity team as part of its membership services and benefits package.

Free Legal Guidance for Children in Scotland members

There are three ways to get in touch and to find out more:

1. Free legal guidance: the guidance available covers a range of charity business, governance and employment issues, including:

  • Charity formation, incorporations, constitutional reviews & reorganisations;
  • Joint working, collaborations & mergers;
  • Contract and commercial matters;
  • Trustee responsibilities, governance and dealing with OSCR;
  • Fundraising & legacies;
  • Employment issues;
  • Tax, inheritance and succession planning;
  • Commercial Property - leases, purchases and sales;
  • Cross-border advice;
  • Wills, powers of attorney and guardianship.

How does the helpline work?

There are two ways to get in touch:

By phone

You can speak directly to one of our charity experts on 0131 240 0777.  If they are not available at the time, you can leave a voicemail to which someone will contact you within 24 hours (outside of weekends and public/bank holidays, when the call back will be made on the first business day following the weekend or holiday - between 9am-5pm).

or alternatively

fill out the online form.  Please note all fields marked with an * are mandatory.

  • One of our charity experts will call you back within 24 hours - outside of weekends and public/bank holidays, when the call back will be made on the first business day following the weekend or holiday - between 9am-5pm.
  • You may have a more complex or specialist issue to discuss, in which case, our adviser may need to do some research before they call you back. If the advice you need is outside the scope of the helpline, we will advise you on where best to obtain the advice you require.

2. Free legal factsheets

Gillespie Macandrew's factsheets provide general information on specific areas of law, which will help you to identify and develop strategies to avoid potential legal problems.

Our factsheets cover a range of issues including trustee duties, contract law, leasing, employment law, wills, guardianship and powers of attorney, dispute resolution and much more >Legal Library

3. Sign-up to receive our free regular updates

Our publications will provide you with regular updates and guidance on current legal issues, forthcoming developments and the thoughts and recommendations of Gillespie Macandrew's legal, employment and tax experts.

We currently publish Addendum for charities, businesses and individuals, and we issue a monthly email alert which focuses on commercial, employment and tax issues. Back issues are available to view online.

You can sign-up to receive as many of our regular updates as you require - simply email with a note of what publications you wish to receive and you will be added to our distribution list.

Need more help?

If you need further assistance, there are two options available: you can either consult your own solicitor, or you can seek expert charity advice from one of the Gillespie Macandrew team. This advice would be on a fee-paying basis.

Please note written, documented advice cannot be given and cannot be considered, except in the context of an email or online enquiry, and cannot be considered part of this free service.
