Associate, Private Client
Donald joined Gillespie Macandrew in 2002 and became an
Associate in the firm's Private Client department in 2005. A
qualified member of the Association of Taxation Technicians, he
prepares custom-made Wills that save tax, minimise the impact of
nursing fees, and ensure that his clients' wealth passes to the
right beneficiaries.
He understands the additional complexities that can arise from
second marriages or where provision needs to be made for youngsters
or vulnerable adults. From managing the transition to adulthood of
children with additional needs, to dealing with incapacity due to
illness, injury or simply old age, Donald has built up a wealth of
experience in navigating clients through the solutions available
under the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000, including
powers of attorney, intervention orders and ongoing guardianships.
He regularly speaks on these subjects at both conferences for
professionals and workshops for families and carers.
Donald provided legal input to the Scottish edition of the book
'Safe and Secure', which was produced by Equal Futures and
offers step-by-step advice for families caring for people with
disabilities. He also works closely with a number of other
charities operating in this field, and often contributes articles
to their newsletters. In 2010, he became the first Edinburgh-based
solicitor to be accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a
specialist in Incapacity & Mental Disability Law, of which
there are still only six in the country.
Despite being a devoted squash player for many years, he was
recently persuaded by his wife and children that tennis also has
its merits. He is now confused and plays both games badly, yet
enthusiastically.
