Update: Short-term lets legislation passed by Scottish Parliament

Published: 31 January 2022
Time to read: 1 min

New legislation approved by the Scottish Parliament means that all short-term let properties will require a licence to ensure they are safe and the people providing them are suitable. The Scottish Government hopes that the legislation will help balance the needs and concerns of communities with wider economic and tourism interests.

The changes mean that all Local Authorities will have to establish a short-term licensing scheme by October 2022. Existing hosts and operators will have until 1 April 2023 to apply for a licence for each property that they operate as a short-term let. All short-term lets in Scotland will require a licence by 2024.

The legislation is predicted to come into force in April 2023.
